Bungie Unveils Major Overhaul for Marathon

Since its launch in March 2026, Marathon has faced its share of challenges, but Bungie is actively developing new game modes to revitalize the experience. Previously, Bungie hinted at upcoming modes and even introduced an experimental one called Vault Breaker. Today, the company shared details on Twitter about fresh ways to play. The original extraction modes will remain, but Bungie is adding a team deathmatch mode and new PvE modes reminiscent of Destiny. Additionally, the Perimeter, essentially the tutorial level, will be expanded to match the scale of other full zones. Bungie's aim appears to be reducing barriers for new players and guiding them into familiar gameplay styles, which should help them gradually adapt to the divisive traditional extraction mode. However, these additions won't arrive all at once. Bungie outlined a roadmap: a Nightfall refresh in October, followed by the Symbiosis update in December, which brings Marathon's first permanent PvE mode and Team Deathmatch. More details on the PvE mode will come closer to its release. In March, marking Marathon's one-year anniversary, a larger update will link all these modes together, introduce a new onboarding experience previewed in a behind-the-scenes documentary released today, and even feature a giant Tick Queen. These updates show promise for drawing players back, but their success remains to be seen. Meanwhile, Bungie is returning to Destiny, starting with bringing back vaulted content in Destiny 2. Fans have apparently convinced Bungie to commit long-term, with developer Poria Torkan stating, "Bungie wouldn't be what it is today without it. It's the foundation upon which everything else rests, and we are absolutely not done with Destiny."
