Former Sony Studio Tech Lead Suggests PlayStation's PC Pullback Could Be a Response to Steam Machine

Sony has reportedly scaled back its PC gaming strategy significantly, with major single-player PlayStation titles now set to remain exclusive to the PS5. This strategic pivot has sparked speculation about the reasons behind it. While some have suggested Sony wants to prevent PlayStation games from appearing on the next-generation Xbox—which supports both Xbox and PC titles—a developer from a recently shuttered Sony studio offers a different perspective.

Peter Dalton, Head of Technology at Bluepoint Games, shared on social media that a "more interesting possibility" is Sony reacting to the emergence of a Steam-based console ecosystem, specifically the recently announced and delayed Steam Machine.

"Consoles primarily exist because they offer a more affordable and straightforward alternative to gaming PCs," Dalton explained. "For most families, a dedicated gaming console is easier to justify than building or maintaining a high-end PC.

"However, if Valve launches a new Steam console that delivers a console-like experience while granting access to the entire PC game library, it could become a highly attractive option. In that scenario, if Sony were releasing all its games simultaneously on PC, the Steam console could effectively combine the best of both worlds: console simplicity with the vast selection of PC gaming.

"It would be quite ironic if, after decades of traditional console competition, Valve ultimately ended up winning the console war."

The big questions remain: when will Valve actually release the Steam Machine, and at what price? Valve recently hinted that the Steam Machine might not launch until 2027 but later clarified that it still plans to release the hardware this year. As for pricing, Valve has yet to announce specifics, but the company faces challenges in keeping the Steam Machine relatively inexpensive due to rising PC hardware costs driven by the current AI boom.

Earlier this month, Bloomberg reported that Sony's policy shift was influenced by disappointing recent sales of PlayStation games on PC, risks to the PlayStation brand, and potential impacts on PS5 and future PS6 sales. The report also suggested that the possibility of PlayStation games running on the next Xbox might have motivated Sony's return to console exclusives.

In recent years, Sony has expanded PlayStation to PC but has not gone as far as Microsoft, which releases all its games on PC simultaneously with console versions. Instead, Sony has adopted a staggered approach, releasing single-player PlayStation games on PC after a period of console exclusivity. For live service games like Helldivers 2, it's a different story—Sony publishes on PC day one, achieving record-breaking success with Arrowhead's third-person action game. Similarly, Sony-owned Bungie launched the live service extraction shooter Marathon simultaneously on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X and S. As a result, titles like Sucker Punch's Ghost of Yotei and Insomniac's Marvel's Wolverine will not release on PC and will remain PS5 exclusives.

However, since some major single-player PlayStation games are already available on Steam, the next Xbox could potentially play games like Marvel's Spider-Man and Ghost of Tsushima. All these titles will, of course, be playable on the Steam Machine whenever it eventually launches.

As for Bluepoint Games, the studio behind remakes such as Shadow of the Colossus and Demon's Souls, approximately 70 employees are expected to be affected by the closure, which is set to occur officially this month.
