Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is introducing a highly requested quality-of-life improvement that fans have been clamoring for over the years.
Beginning with Modern Warfare 4's release, double XP tokens will only tick down while you're in a match. Most double XP tokens last between 15 minutes and an hour. They're a fantastic way to level up quickly, but for years, players have been frustrated by how they function.
Previously, the timer would start the moment you activated a token and would keep running even in pre-game lobbies where you couldn't earn any XP. Now, Infinity Ward is changing it so the double XP timer only counts down when you're actively playing a match. That means you'll get much more value out of each token!

This is just one of several changes Infinity Ward is making to show it's listening to fans ahead of Modern Warfare 4's launch. Last week, the studio confirmed it would also add a toggle allowing players to turn off skins. So, if you don't want to see someone's obnoxious skin, you no longer have to. Instead, they'll appear as a default character model.
Some fans are hoping these changes will lead to bigger ones, such as major adjustments to skill-based matchmaking. Whether that happens remains to be seen, but it seems like Activision is trying to win over fans as much as possible as it enters arguably its most competitive launch window in years. Call of Duty will have to contend with GTA 6 this fall, a game that will be a black hole when it comes to media coverage, engagement, and overall spending. Whether that hurts Call of Duty in the long run will be interesting to see.
