Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2's highly anticipated patch 12.0 arrived this week, introducing the new playable Techmarine class (full patch notes available here). While players are enjoying this fresh addition, the game's first voice pack DLC has triggered a significant wave of criticism.
The $4.99 Chapter Voice Pack 1 offers 450 re-recorded voicelines and a unique Space Marine Head cosmetic for the Blood Angels, Space Wolves, and Black Templars chapters. It's sold separately and not included in Season Pass 1 or Season Pass 2, frustrating some fans. However, the implementation of these voice lines has led to a 'mostly negative' rating on Steam.
Players discovered that equipping a DLC voice causes the character to revert to the default class voice during objective interactions, such as searching for codes on a Cadian's body in the Inferno mission. This creates a jarring and inconsistent audio experience, as Ultramarine standard lines still play for mission-related dialogue, making the voice switch back and forth awkwardly.
Additionally, many feel misled by the '450 re-recorded voicelines' claim on the Steam page, believing it includes all language versions rather than just one. Negative reviews highlight issues like silent missions due to missing banter, reused lines from existing characters, and lack of helmet filters for voices. Some players report that voice lines are identical to vanilla counterparts, such as Space Wolf reload alerts matching Decimus's.
Complaints extend to the subreddit, where users describe the DLC as underwhelming and potentially false advertising. One redditor shared a refund screenshot, noting the absence of mission dialogue and proper voice integration. Others criticize the inability to revert voice choices without spending accolades and the static facial animations.
This backlash marks the first major community uproar for Space Marine 2 since its successful 2024 launch, which boosted the game's popularity and led to Titus becoming a tabletop poster boy. While patch 12.0 brought positive additions, the voice pack misstep raises concerns about priorities shifting to Space Marine 3 development.
