The legendary anime Neon Genesis Evangelion is making a major comeback with a brand new series, featuring Nier director Yoko Taro as the head writer and screenwriter. The project is being co-produced by Studio Khara, founded by the original Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno.
This exciting announcement came at the conclusion of the Evangelion:30+ 30th Anniversary event in Yokohama, Japan—a three-day festival celebrating three decades of the iconic franchise. The event showcased exhibitions, talk shows, an Evangelion kabuki performance, and a new 15-minute short starring Asuka Langley, capping off a year of anniversary celebrations.
Joining Yoko Taro on the creative team are directors Kazuya Tsurumaki, who previously directed the Rebuild of Evangelion films, and Toko Yatabe, a key animator on the Rebuild series. The music will be composed by Keiichi Okabe, known for his work on the Nier, Drakengard, and Tekken game series. Production will be handled by Studio Khara and CloverWorks.
While specific plot details remain under wraps, the official announcement confirms this will be an entirely new series. On X, Yoko Taro retweeted Studio Khara's post, adding, "It's been announced! I'll do my best!"
The original Neon Genesis Evangelion anime aired from 1995 to 1996, achieving massive success both in Japan and internationally. The 1997 film The End of Evangelion provided an alternate conclusion to the series. From 2007 to 2021, the Rebuild of Evangelion film series reimagined the story across four movies, with the final installment, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, earning over 10 billion yen at the Japanese box office.
In a related development, Studio Gainax, the original studio behind the anime, was liquidated in December last year following scandals and legal disputes with Studio Khara—a situation Anno described as a "truly disappointing end."
