Fans Stunned by Shrek 2 Remastered's Demanding PC Specs

Shrek 2 may not be the most graphically intensive game, but the remaster's recommended specs are unexpectedly high. Originally launched in 2004, this remaster promises improved textures, an enhanced UI, 4K resolution — and apparently, a powerful PC to run it.

According to the Steam page, simply running Shrek 2 Remastered requires a GeForce RTX 4060 or RTX 3060 Ti graphics card or equivalent. For the best experience, the developer recommends a GeForce RTX 4070 or RTX 5070. What have they been feeding him? Check out the screenshots in the slideshow below to see what to expect.

"Those swamp graphics better be baller," one X / Twitter user wrote. Another complained that they can run Red Dead Redemption 2 at max settings, yet their PC would supposedly struggle with this makeover of a 22-year-old game.

"Seems a bit much for a remaster of a GameCube game but if that's what we need to render Shrek's highly detailed green skin then so be it," another Twitter user said. "They went full in with the GTA 6 aesthetics," added another.

Other posts raised concerns about it being a "vibe coded" remaster, but there's currently no AI disclosure on Steam to suggest that's the case. Valve requires developers to specify when they use AI during game creation or marketing.

Shrek 2 Remastered was announced with a trailer parodying GTA 6, and is set to launch just over a week before Rockstar's highly anticipated title, on November 10. Despite the parody trailer, no one expected it to have similar graphical demands as GTA 6, but here we are. You'll need 12-16GB of VRAM for this beast. It's a bit ogre the top.

The remaster is developed by port specialist Aspyr, the studio behind Lord of the Rings: War in the North — Legacy Edition, Deus Ex: Remastered, Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered, and the disastrous Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection.
