GTA 6 Might Be Taking a Key Feature from Red Dead Redemption 2

Grand Theft Auto 6 could be adopting a major mechanic from Red Dead Redemption 2, which may upset some GTA fans.

Rockstar Games recently revealed the Ultimate Edition for GTA 6, which includes several perks that have sparked controversy. One of these is free access to a garage featuring a weapons locker where you can "customize your loadout for any occasion." This suggests players may need to be more selective about the weapons they carry.

In Red Dead Redemption 2, you can only carry two large weapons (rifles, shotguns, etc.) and two handguns. If there's no physical way for your character to hold a weapon, it stays on your horse. This system is more realistic and forces players to think carefully about their loadout, a feature that has divided players over the years. It's a stark contrast to GTA 5, where you can carry dozens of weapons in your pocket. Fans have been wondering which inventory system GTA 6 will use, and the inclusion of a weapons locker hints it might be RDR2's.

Leaked gameplay for GTA 6 also suggested Rockstar might go this route, as the footage showed weapons on the protagonists' backs via slings and a duffel bag that could provide extra storage. However, that footage came from an early work-in-progress build, so it may not reflect the final game.

GTA Online eventually added lockers, but that was three years after launch. By then, Rockstar had added many weapons, making storage necessary to avoid a cluttered weapon wheel. Unless GTA 6 has as many weapons as GTA Online, it's hard to see the same utility.

The free garage will also include a stash box for "deposit[ing] stolen goods to be fenced." This indicates looting and dynamic robberies might play a bigger role in GTA 6. In Red Dead Redemption 2, players could rob anyone and ransack homes for loot to sell. It seems GTA 6 may have a similar system, and the duffel bag could help carry that loot.

Ultimately, we can only speculate about GTA 6's gameplay until Rockstar gives us a proper look. Hopefully, that first look isn't far off now that marketing is ramping up. Pre-orders have started globally after news that the standard edition will cost $79.99. For physical media fans, the game won't come on a disc; physical copies will include a digital code. Some retailers are protesting and refusing to sell the game.

GTA 6 launches on November 19 for Xbox Series X|S and PS5.
