Fans of Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight are on high alert for spoilers after some Xbox owners who purchased the game digitally from Walmart discovered they could download and play it ahead of its official launch. Redditor Dramatic-Track-9935 claimed to have obtained a digital code from Walmart that, when redeemed on their Xbox, allowed them to download the game. Once the “ready to start” message appeared, they were able to jump in and play. They posted images to support their claim.
Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is set to launch officially on May 22, with Deluxe edition owners gaining access on May 19. IGN has reached out to Warner Bros. Games for comment.
After the Reddit post gained traction, others attempted the same trick, with some reporting success. One player said they played “all night,” though the game displayed a “required update available” message. Some who exploited the trick are disconnecting their Xbox from the internet to avoid an update that might block early access.
It appears that Warner Bros. Games or developer TT Games have since clamped down on the exploit, though it's unclear what exactly happened. Was this a preload error similar to the one affecting Forza Horizon 6 over the weekend? Or did Walmart issue incorrect codes for Xbox redemption? Either way, fans are now posting spoiler warnings.
It remains to be seen whether Warner Bros. Games will alter its release plans for Lego Batman. Over the weekend, IGN reported on the addition of DRM software Denuvo to the game ahead of launch, which sparked concern due to controversial PC system requirements.
