Kingdom Hearts 4: New Trailer, Late 2027 Launch, and Disney+ Anime Unveiled at D23

D23 brought a treasure trove of Kingdom Hearts news, including a fresh trailer for Kingdom Hearts 4, a release window of late 2027, and an unexpected surprise: a Disney+ anime series based on the beloved franchise.

The new trailer showcases the addition of Pixar's Coco to the game. Additionally, Disney announced that Coco 2 is set for a November 2029 release.

The Kingdom Hearts anime for Disney+ is being developed in collaboration with series creator Tetsuya Nomura and Square Enix. It will reimagine the video game series with an original story "that will expand on the universe of Kingdom Hearts while celebrating the characters that have captured the hearts of millions of fans around the world."

"Kingdom Hearts has captivated gamers everywhere with its unique blend of adventure and imagination," said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family. "There's something really exciting about taking a world fans have spent years exploring through the games and bringing it to life in a completely new way. And with a creative team working closely with the legendary Tetsuya Nomura, our new series will be unmistakably Kingdom Hearts, while giving fans a whole new way to experience the world they love."

Tonight's announcements come just before tomorrow's Kingdom Hearts panel at D23, where Disney is expected to discuss Kingdom Hearts 4 in more detail. The 'DEEP DIVE into KINGDOM HEARTS' panel will be livestreamed on August 15 at 4:30 PM PT / 7:30 PM ET / August 16 at 12:30 AM UK time. Disney has promised a "behind-the-scenes look at the making of the games," but it's the panel's guest list that has fans buzzing with anticipation.

The panel will feature Nana Gadd from Disney & Pixar Games, Tai Yasue from Square Enix, Haley Joel Osment (voice of Sora), David Gallagher (voice of Riku), and Renée Johnson (voice director for Disney characters). With such a lineup—and Yasue believed to be co-director of Kingdom Hearts 4—fans are hopeful for substantial news on the highly anticipated sequel.

Kingdom Hearts 4 made a surprise appearance at the June 2026 Nintendo Direct, offering a first look at gameplay years after its initial announcement. In a separate statement, Square Enix confirmed that Kingdom Hearts 4 will launch simultaneously on PC (via Epic Games Store and Steam), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.

"A new installment in the action role-playing series developed and published by Square Enix, Kingdom Hearts 4 gives fans a look at some of the characters that protagonist Sora will meet in the mysterious city of Quadratum," read the official description. "Sora will once again journey to realms where new figures cross his path and new powers awaken his next chapter. Kingdom Hearts 4 will be available at launch on Nintendo Switch 2."
