In an unusual turn of events, a well-known Call of Duty esports commentator has decided to step down from his position after starting a romantic relationship with his co-commentator's ex-wife. Clint "Maven" Evans, a commentator for the Call of Duty League (CDL), announced that he is leaving the CDL for the "foreseeable future." He explained that his decision followed his choice to pursue a relationship with Maurisa, the ex-wife of his co-commentator, Joseph "MerK" DeLuca. In a statement, Evans acknowledged that the situation is "taboo" and "unconventional."
"As some of you know, I was very close to my casting partner Joe and his family," Evans wrote. "Maurisa was one of my best friends. We remained friends after they divorced, and along the way it became more than that and we started dating. I understand how unconventional/taboo it is. It’s truly not something I ever foresaw happening."
He also expressed hope to return to the CDL in the future, though he admitted it might not happen. "I hope that one day I’ll be back working on the CDL," he continued. "If not, it was a hell of a ride, and I appreciate the love over the years. Please continue to show support to Joe, the CDL, and its talent!"
The Call of Duty esports community has reacted strongly to the news, with many feeling that Evans betrayed his friend of over a decade. DeLuca has not commented on the situation and has not posted on his X page since October 4. The start date for the upcoming CDL season has not been officially announced, but it typically begins in December, shortly after the latest Call of Duty release.
