A live-action adaptation of the Persona series is reportedly in development at Netflix. According to Variety, the streaming giant has begun work on a TV series based on Sega and Atlus' acclaimed RPG franchise. Christopher Monfette, known for his work on Star Trek: Picard and 9-1-1, is attached as writer, executive producer, and showrunner.
Executive producers include Shawn Levy and Robert Atwood of 21 Laps, as well as Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson of Story Kitchen. Sega producer Toru Nakahara will also executive produce. Netflix declined to comment on the report.
It's unclear whether the series will adapt a specific game or tell an original story. The franchise, which began in 1996, includes five mainline games, numerous spin-offs, and remakes, offering plenty of source material. The most recent main entry, Persona 5, introduced the Phantom Thieves in 2016, with Persona 5 Royal expanding the story in 2024.
While no plot details are confirmed, fans are already speculating about which elements or characters might appear. As the project is in early development, no release date or casting information has been announced.
Netflix previously collaborated with 21 Laps on Stranger Things, which concluded last year. The production company also worked on The Perfect Couple and Last Man Standing, and has film credits including Deadpool & Wolverine (directed by Levy) and Backrooms. Future projects include Star Wars: Starfighter (also directed by Levy).
Story Kitchen has backed several video game adaptations, most notably Sega's live-action Sonic the Hedgehog films. Upcoming projects include adaptations of Sifu, It Takes Two, Just Cause, Life is Strange, and more.
It may be some time before the Persona series takes shape. Meanwhile, Netflix continues efforts on its Gears of War movie. Fans can also look forward to Persona 4 Revival and Persona 6, which was announced at the Xbox Games Showcase earlier this month.
