Minecraft's latest update is earning widespread praise for introducing a simple, long-awaited feature: the ability to sit. For 20 years, players have built elaborate homes, dug deep mines, and created thriving civilizations, but they couldn't sit down until now. While they could sleep in cozy beds, there was no way to rest their weary legs after mining diamonds or slaying monsters—except for boats and minecarts.
The news came as part of a deep dive into the upcoming update, which also includes straw beds, a new biome, and more. Players can sit using a new cushion item. The developers anticipate players using these cushions in creative ways beyond their imagination. The update is expected to arrive for all players this fall, but those with access to preview builds can try the sitting feature today.
Fans are thrilled, having requested this feature for 17 years. It may seem trivial to outsiders, but Minecraft players love roleplaying, and this eliminates the need for mods or workarounds just to sit down. "The ability to sit down without mods feels MASSIVE," one fan commented on the announcement video on YouTube. "The way I cheered at the announcement of being able to sit, you’d think Mojang announced an End Drop," said another.
In other Minecraft news, Microsoft began restructuring Xbox this week, with Minecraft leadership now reporting directly to Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. She believes the IP has been "massively underinvested" despite numerous spin-offs, tons of merchandise, and a film that earned nearly a billion dollars at the box office.
