An official Baldur's Gate 2 remake is reportedly being developed at Wizards of the Coast. According to PC Gamer, remakes of both Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 are likely in the works ahead of Baldur's Gate 4, with former BioWare developer and Baldur's Gate 2 co-lead designer Kevin Martens involved. The report suggests both remakes could launch together. IGN has reached out to Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro for comment.
If the report is true, the scope of the remakes is a major question. It seems unlikely they will be remade in the style of Baldur's Gate 3, given the massive amount of content from both games. Hasbro may view these remakes as a stopgap between Baldur's Gate 3 and the inevitable sequel, which faces high fan expectations. With Larian moving on to the next Divinity game, there are big shoes to fill.
Baldur's Gate (1998) and Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn (2000) were isometric, real-time with pause games where players controlled up to six characters. Will the remakes adopt turn-based combat like Baldur's Gate 3, or a hybrid system? Meanwhile, a Baldur's Gate 3 HBO show, a prequel novel about Astarion, an official cookbook, and a coloring book are also in development.
