'It's Clear This DLC Missed the Mark' — Space Marine 2 Creators Apologize for $5 Voice Pack Controversy, Make It Free and Issue Refunds

Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive, the publisher and developer behind Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, have formally apologized to upset fans regarding the game's contentious $5 Chapter Voice Pack DLC. In response to the backlash, they are making the DLC free for everyone and providing refunds to those who purchased it.

The Chapter Voice Pack triggered Space Marine 2's first significant wave of criticism, with some players even alleging false advertising by Focus and Saber. This add-on includes 450 re-recorded voice lines and a unique Space Marine Head cosmetic for the Blood Angels, Space Wolves, and Black Templars chapters. It was initially sold separately, which frustrated many fans. However, the core issue stems from how these new voice lines are integrated into the game, leading to an "overwhelmingly negative" user review rating on Steam.

Even when the DLC voice line is equipped, Space Marine 2 switches back to the default class voice during objective interactions, such as searching a Cadian's body for codes in the Inferno mission. This unexpected behavior creates a disjointed and awkward experience in gameplay, causing the Space Marine's voice to flip back and forth inconsistently. Additionally, some players felt misled by the "450 re-recorded voice lines" description on the Steam page, believing it covered all language versions rather than just one.

This controversy overshadowed what could have been a positive period for Space Marine 2, especially with the recent addition of the Techmarine playable class in patch 12.0. Instead, the game faced its first major community uproar since its record-breaking launch in 2024. Space Marine 2 has been a tremendous success for Focus, Saber, and Warhammer owner Games Workshop, attracting a wave of new fans to the franchise. Its impact is so significant that Games Workshop has featured Titus, the game's protagonist, as the face of the Warhammer 40,000 tabletop game. Following the game's release, Space Marine 3 was announced to be in development, making this DLC issue particularly surprising.

Now, Focus and Saber have directly addressed the situation with a joint statement posted on social media.

"Dear Space Marine 2 players," the statement began. "We heard your feedback regarding the Chapter Voice Pack DLC and wanted to address it. It's obvious this DLC has failed to meet your expectations and we are sorry about that. Delivering quality content - free or not - is a priority for us.

"This is why we've decided to offer a refund to all owners of the DLC, and to make it free from now on. We are currently setting up the refund with platforms owners and will come back soon with more info. Always grateful for your dedication to our game."

In a recent interview with IGN, Saber development chief Tim Willits refuted claims that the focus has shifted entirely to Space Marine 3, assuring fans that more content is on the way.

"No, we actually just released a big update and it's still going strong," Willits said, referring to the Techmarine update. "Were we at number four on the top sales? So it's still doing great for us. And we just released a big update. And like World War Z, we're still making content for that, while the team obviously works on Space Marine 3."
