Double Fine, the studio behind Psychonauts and Costume Quest, has launched a new Kickstarter campaign for its game jam, Amnesia Fortnight, following its departure from Xbox. The company cheekily promises to develop Brütal Legend 2 if the campaign reaches an astronomical $100 million, a goal that seems nearly impossible.
Double Fine is using Kickstarter to fund its latest experimental game jam, a platform it previously used to finance Broken Age before being acquired by Microsoft. After the recent split, which resulted in layoffs affecting 25% of the team, the studio is once again turning to crowdfunding to support its indie projects.
The campaign has already raised over $275,000 of its $400,000 goal with 29 days remaining. While stretch goals are yet to be announced, Double Fine has already teased that a Brütal Legend sequel would be developed if the campaign hits the $100 million mark.
Of course, reaching $100 million is highly unlikely, so why tease such a beloved sequel? Is it just a pipe dream to generate buzz? A year ago, Double Fine said none of its projects were sequels, but that was before the split from Microsoft. Now, the studio has clarified that it is still working on larger games behind the scenes, while the Kickstarter funds its immediate needs. Perhaps Brütal Legend 2 is one of those larger projects, especially since Double Fine retained the rights to its game catalog after leaving Xbox.
In a statement, the studio said: "We are still working on bigger games! This is to help keep us open while we seek funding for those larger projects, and also for the team to have fun with one of our favorite traditions after a very long, tough summer."
