Ace Combat 8 Dev Reveals Tasha Was the 'Most Expensive' Character to Create

Kazutoki Kono, the brand director for Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, recently joked that the development team spent so much time on Tasha that she became the game's 'most expensive character.' During his first visit to China for a group media interview following a hands-on demo, Kono discussed Tasha's growing popularity. Despite the game not yet being released, the pink-haired pilot has already become a fan favorite. Tasha Severskaya, a former star pilot in Yuktobania's acrobatic team Zvezda, joins the Endurance to film promotional footage but ends up staying due to the outbreak of war, eventually becoming part of the Joker Flight squadron. Kono admitted he was taken aback by Tasha's social media popularity, noting that he personally supports 'Team Kate Evans,' the leader of Queen Flight. He also revealed that Tasha required the most development time of any character, as the team continuously tweaked her design. 'Work on Tasha started relatively early, and she was originally designed by a different artist. She is also the character that took the longest to finalize. Her story and direction were already set, but we kept modifying various aspects afterward, making her the character we refined the longest during development. That's why inside the development team, we jokingly call her 'the most expensive character,'' Kono said via Inven Global. He attributes her popularity to her fashion sense, suggesting that her pink hair and unique military outfits align with current fan trends. 'I think elements like her personality, outfit, and especially her sense of fashion in wearing military attire so uniquely happened to fit current trends well, which contributed to all the attention she received,' he explained. IGN's Will Borger previewed Ace Combat 8 this summer, describing it as a 'very grounded game' that left him 'satisfied, but knowing [he] still had so much more to do.' He also spoke with the developers about their ambitious multiplayer plans, which include 100-player lobbies, multiple mission types, and a co-op warfare mode. Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve launches on October 2, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam.
