Josh Sawyer, director of Fallout: New Vegas, has given a glowing review to Amazon's Fallout TV series, calling it one of the best video game adaptations ever made for film or television. In a new interview with The 41st Precinct, Sawyer discussed his career and shared his thoughts on the show, which is set in New Vegas—the same location as Obsidian's beloved 2010 game.
Sawyer was enthusiastic overall, despite having a few minor reservations. "I think it's an amazing adaptation," he said. "I know the bar isn't always high for TV or film adaptations of video games, but I think it's one of the best I've seen. Sure, there are personal things where I'd say, 'I don't know if I would have taken the plot in that direction,' but that's just any writer looking at someone else's work. I don't consider those real criticisms."
He praised the portrayal of Mr. House, noting that Justin Theroux was a great fit for the character. "I didn't create Mr. House—that was John Gonzalez—but I love Justin Theroux in everything, and I think he did a fantastic job."
Sawyer also addressed fan complaints about the show's accuracy, particularly regarding Dinky the T-Rex statue in Novac. In the game, Dinky faces away from town, but in the show, it's rotated 180 degrees to face the motel, allowing protagonist Lucy to use it as a sniper perch. While some fans were upset, Sawyer understood the change. "I get why people are upset, but the scene wouldn't work otherwise. I wasn't personally bothered by it. Maybe people will call me a traitor now, but I thought it was a good representation of iconic elements from the game."
He revealed that he visited the Season 2 set and saw the vault and Freeside, which looked very close to the game, though layouts weren't identical. "They look really, really close," he said.
Looking ahead, Sawyer emphasized that the show is telling its own story, not adapting the plot of Fallout: New Vegas. "Yes, New Vegas is there, but it's their own plot. They have their own specific story they're telling through these areas."
