Backrooms Director Kane Parsons Sparks Portal Movie Speculation with Valve Visit

Kane Parsons has ignited rumors of a possible Portal movie after sharing photos from a visit to Valve's offices on his personal Instagram.

At only 20 years old, Parsons is already one of the most successful young filmmakers ever. His debut film, Backrooms, raked in around $393 million worldwide on a modest $10 million budget, earning rave reviews from critics and fans.

Even renowned game director Hideo Kojima praised the movie, which is based on a 4Chan creepypasta that has since exploded into a vast fan-made universe filled with indie horror games, art, and YouTube videos—making Parsons the clear choice to direct A24's adaptation.

Parsons' future looks incredibly promising, and he's been making the rounds at high-profile locations following Backrooms' triumph… including Valve's headquarters. Sharp-eyed fans quickly noticed a video on his Instagram Stories on September 16, showing a windowed room at Valve's HQ bathed in sunset light.

This isn't Parsons' first trip to Valve; he also visited in June and similarly posted photos on Instagram. These posts have fans more hopeful than ever that some collaboration with a Valve game is in the works, especially given his well-known love for Portal.

In a May interview with The New York Times, Parsons confessed that making a Portal film was a "dream" project and said the game heavily influenced his own work. That's not shocking, as he essentially admitted to slipping a Half-Life sound effect into Backrooms during an interview with IGN's Tom Jorgensen.

However, there might be a hurdle in bringing Portal to the big screen: J.J. Abrams was originally attached to lead a film adaptation through his production company, Bad Robot. This was first announced in 2013, along with news that he would also make a Half-Life movie, but things have been quiet since.

In a 2021 chat with IGN, Abrams said Portal was still in development at Warner Bros., but we haven't heard anything in the five years since. Fans have taken notice, and many are holding out hope that Valve has decided to pivot and work with Parsons instead.

"I mean, how long has that Portal and Half-Life movie been in production by J.J. Abrams, like what… 2013? If Kane is really gung-ho about making a Portal film, then I don't see Valve wanting to stop him," one fan wrote on X.

"Portal was already supposed to get an adaptation from JJ Abrams, thank God that didn't happen. So I'd say there's a decent chance of it happening," another speculated.

For now, the futures of these potential Portal and Half-Life films are uncertain… but Parsons is making it easy to imagine what his take on Valve's iconic game franchises would look like.
