Rockstar Confirms GTA 6 Simulates Tropical Storms and Hurricanes

Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to revolutionize open-world weather effects with simulated tropical storms and hurricanes, according to Rockstar. In Game Informer's cover story, senior associate editor Marcus Stewart highlighted the need for diverse weather in Leonida, inspired by Florida's unpredictable climate. Rockstar has risen to the challenge.

Owen Shepherd, Rockstar's vice president of art for lighting and rendering, explained to Stewart, "We have re-engineered our weather system to make everything much more localized and persistent," adding that "the world features new fully dynamic cloudscapes that roll across the map."

Given that GTA 6's map is three times larger than those in Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, the ability to simulate moving storm systems is even more impressive. This means you could experience localized rain showers in one area while the next is sunny. But the weather's impact goes beyond visuals; it will have lasting effects on the environment.

Stewart noted that "GTA 6's rain creates realistic rainbows under the right lighting conditions, and that recently showered areas will remain wet on the ground and create persistent puddles once the storm passes." While thunderstorms alone would be impressive, Florida's real-life weather is far more extreme.

Fortunately, GTA 6 will also feature simulated tropical storms and hurricanes that wreak havoc on the environment. Shepherd described these storms as having "heavy clouds, strong winds, dense atmospherics and a lot of rain combine so that everything is dripping wet, water is gushing off roof edges and lampposts, thunder rumbles and flashes of lighting light up the clouds dramatically."

Although Game Informer's cover story doesn't include video of these weather systems in action, the persistent effects on the environment spark endless possibilities. Will streets flood? Will buildings and trees be knocked down? The potential is immense, and I'm already eager to go storm chasing.

GTA 6 launches on November 19, so we won't have to wait long to see what the weather can do.
