Xbox has officially announced Senua, a new entry in Ninja Theory's Hellblade series. Starring the Celtic warrior Senua once again, this game promises to be more gameplay-focused while expanding on the narrative foundations of its predecessors.
Revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase, Senua is set to launch in 2027 on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PS5. The debut trailer will feel familiar to fans, with its grounded, earthy aesthetic and brutal combat. It shows Senua emerging from a strange golden substance before traversing a beautiful world filled with dangerous enemies and eerie lights. As always, she is accompanied by whispering voices—manifestations of her psychosis.
Interestingly, Ninja Theory chose to call it simply "Senua" rather than Hellblade 3. In an interview with Xbox Wire, studio head Dom Matthews explained, "The title 'Senua' really reflects that this is something fresh, new, and different. It is a different style of game."
Eagle-eyed viewers will notice deeper combat skills, including weapon throwing and stealth attacks. Compared to the more stripped-back Hellblade games, Matthews revealed that Senua is designed as a full-fledged action-adventure game, with more exploration, puzzle solving, and robust combat encounters.
"The key phrase for us has been 'tactical choice,'" Matthews said. "Players can approach fights with options—how to engage, or even whether to fight at all. In the trailer, you see Senua stealthily sneaking up on enemies instead of charging in. That's the kind of choice we're excited for players to have."
Senua also has "Focus Abilities," like the reality-shattering skill seen in the trailer. These can be used across traversal, puzzle solving, and combat—for example, shattering to open new spaces or push back enemies.
Despite the deeper combat, Matthews noted, "This is not a combat-action game. People shouldn't expect two-thirds combat. We're aiming for an even split between combat, traversal, and puzzle solving."
The game's map is about twice the size of Hellblade 2, with more verticality and environmental interactions. However, Matthews clarified, "This isn't an open world game. It's a linear story told through interconnected locations."
This larger world is Senua's vision of purgatory, manifesting as her childhood homeland. Trapped between life and death, she seeks to reunite with lost loved ones. While connected to the Hellblade story, Senua is designed as a standalone sequel. "If you haven't played the previous games, you'll fully understand what's happening here," Matthews said.
This announcement confirms rumors of a more "game-like" Hellblade entry and proves the series survived low sales and middling Game Pass performance. For more, check out IGN's roundup of everything announced at Xbox Showcase 2027.
