Miami-Dade Sheriff and Commissioner Push Back on Proposed GTA 6 City Takeover, Calling It a 'Fictional Version of Our Community Defined by Crime and Violence'

The Sheriff of Miami-Dade County is voicing opposition to Miami's plan to celebrate the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 by adorning the city with promotional material for the highly anticipated game, arguing that it glamorizes crime and undermines law enforcement efforts.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is set in Vice City, a fictionalized version of Miami, Florida. Rockstar Games has painstakingly recreated Miami's iconic landmarks and architecture within the game, with fans already spotting real-life locations in the latest trailers.

In late August, local media reported that Miami-Dade County officials had discussed potential GTA 6-themed initiatives with Rockstar, including wrapping the Metro line with Vice City branding, creating custom manhole covers, and decorating Miami International Airport with 'Welcome to Vice City' signage.

While no formal agreements have been made, the city seemed eager to partner with the year's biggest game. However, the Miami-Dade County Sheriff has now brought these proposals to a halt.

Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz and Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez believe that celebrating a franchise known for allowing players to engage in criminal activities would essentially promote a fictional, crime-ridden version of their community.

"Grand Theft Auto is a video game franchise built around criminal activity. Its fictional world includes murder, robbery, drug trafficking, carjacking, violence against law enforcement, and other conduct that the men and women of the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office work every single day to prevent," Cordero-Stutz said, as reported by NBC Miami 6.

"At a time when law enforcement is working daily to reduce violent crime, prevent robberies and car thefts, combat drug trafficking, and build stronger relationships between our deputies and the communities we serve, I believe we need to seriously consider the message we send when our own government promotes a fictional identity centered around many of those same crimes."

"I still cannot believe that we are even considering temporarily rebranding important County assets, including Miami International Airport, as 'Vice City Airport,'" Bermudez added. "Miami-Dade County has spent decades building a reputation as a world-class destination for tourism, business, investment, and opportunity. We should be promoting the Miami-Dade we have worked so hard to build, not a fictional version of our community defined by crime and violence."

It remains unclear what the future holds for Miami's GTA 6 takeover now that the Sheriff has spoken out against it. However, with the game shaping up to be one of the biggest releases in video game history, it could still be a lucrative venture if it goes forward.

The Sheriff isn't the only one raising concerns about GTA 6's November 19 launch; social media users have also sparked debate over the game's relationship mechanic between protagonists Jason and Lucia, with some claiming that playing the game is akin to cheating.
