Sony appears to be testing a new PlayStation 5 feature that would reveal player counts for popular titles such as Call of Duty, Battlefield 6, Minecraft, and more. The feature, spotted by YouTuber Mystic, includes a widget with two tracking options: one for trending titles and another for the top 10 games. The trending section tracks surges in gameplay hours, while the top 10 shows how many players engaged with specific games over the past week.
Unlike Steam, which has long provided transparent player data, this would be a major shift for PlayStation. The feature is currently part of a beta test, so it's uncertain whether it will become official for all PS5 users or be scrapped.
The player count tracker has sparked excitement on social media, as it could offer weekly insights into the popularity of PS5 games. However, Mystic advises caution, noting that the beta version may differ from the final product. The accuracy of the numbers is also unclear, as Sony hasn't specified how they're collected or what metrics are used—such as playtime or engagement periods.
IGN has contacted Sony for comment. If the feature launches, it will arrive nearly six years after the PS5's debut. Sony has yet to confirm a release date for the PlayStation 6, leaving the console's lifecycle uncertain.
