A fresh report indicates Sony is partially retreating from its PC release strategy, with titles like Ghost of Yotei and Saros now confirmed as PlayStation 5 exclusives. According to Bloomberg, while Sony will continue launching online-focused games on PC, its single-player narrative titles will remain confined to PlayStation consoles. This marks a notable pivot back toward console exclusivity, contrasting with rival Microsoft's aggressive multiplatform approach.
Under this new policy, games such as the fighting title Marvel Tokon will still arrive on PC alongside PS5, and Bungie's upcoming extraction shooter Marathon is set for a simultaneous multiplatform release. Externally developed Sony-published projects like Death Stranding 2 and Kena: Scars of Kosmora are also slated for PC launches. However, plans to bring Sucker Punch's Ghost of Yotei to PC have been canceled, as confirmed by Bungie.
Bloomberg attributes this strategic shift to underwhelming PC sales of recent PlayStation ports and concerns over potential damage to the PlayStation brand. There are also fears that releasing major titles on PC could dampen sales of the PS5 and even impact future PS6 console purchases. Additionally, the possibility of PlayStation games running on the next Xbox—which is rumored to support PC games—may have influenced Sony's decision to reinforce console exclusives.
The report does not mention Marvel's Wolverine, but given its exclusive PS5 launch this September, a PC version now appears improbable. Sony has historically taken a staggered approach to PC releases, delaying single-player games after their console debut, unlike Microsoft's day-and-date strategy. Live service titles are treated differently: Helldivers 2 saw a successful day-one PC launch, and Bungie's Marathon is targeting simultaneous release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. Guerrilla's live-service Horizon spinoff, Hunters Gathering, follows a similar multiplatform plan.
Amid this, recent analyst reports suggest the PS6 could be delayed to 2028 or 2029 due to AI-driven chip shortages, potentially extending the PS5's lifecycle. Senior analyst David Gibson of MST International noted that while Sony's current inventory mitigates short-term memory price impacts, future cost hikes might be passed to consumers. Strengthening PS5 exclusives could bolster the console's appeal and drive sales during this extended period.
In related news, Sony recently shuttered Bluepoint Games, known for remakes like Shadow of the Colossus and Demon's Souls, but continues to operate PC port specialist Nixxes Software, acquired in 2021.
