In a surprising move, Sony has released a fresh system software update for the nearly 20-year-old PlayStation 3 on March 18. According to the official PlayStation website, the 200MB update, version 4.93, aims to 'improve system performance' and requires users to renew their Blu-ray player encryption key. This marks the first update for the PS3 in about a year, with PlayStation Lifestyle speculating that it likely addresses security vulnerabilities and jailbreak attempts.
Sony emphasized in a statement, 'Please note, to play Blu-ray discs, your PS3 system needs a renewed Blu-ray player encryption key. Please update your PS3 system software to the latest version to renew the Blu-ray player encryption key.' To install the update, users must have at least 200 MB of free space on their PS3's hard drive or removable storage. The company also recommends keeping the system updated to access new features, better usability, and enhanced security, warning that failure to update will render Blu-ray discs unplayable.
This update follows closely on the heels of Netflix's recent removal from the PS3 platform. Netflix first became available on the PS3 in 2009 via a Blu-ray disc, with a dedicated app launching the next year to eliminate the need for physical media.
In other PlayStation news, Sony is also advancing its PlayStation Portal remote player with a new system software update. This patch enhances visual quality, interaction smoothness, and overall experience, introducing a 1080p High Quality Mode for a more polished streaming experience.
