Star Wars Zero Company Hits 1 Million Sales, Nearly 70% on Steam

Star Wars Zero Company has reportedly sold 1 million copies, with the bulk of those sales coming from Steam. According to Alinea Analytics' Rhys Elliott, who shared the news on social media, the strategy game from Bit Reactor—a studio formed by former XCOM developers from Firaxis—has found a strong audience on Valve's platform.

Breaking down the numbers, 69.9% of the 1 million sales were on Steam, while PlayStation accounted for 19.9% and Xbox/Xbox PC made up 10.2%. Clearly, Steam is the primary home for Zero Company, and Elliott estimates the game has generated around $50 million since its launch last month.

Elliott described this performance as "respectable for this genre and during such a crowded period (even with the Star Wars brand attached)." However, it's unclear whether the game meets publisher EA's expectations. EA has not released official sales figures or commented on the game's commercial performance, and since the company has gone private, it's under no obligation to share revenue data with the market—so we may never know.

What we do know is that Bit Reactor furloughed "many of its workers" before Zero Company even launched, reportedly because it had "run out of most of its money just ahead of the launch of its first game." Bit Reactor told Game File that the decision was "difficult" and made "before it was clear how the launch would go," insisting it was not influenced by EA or Star Wars rights holder Disney. Game File reported that 80% of Bit Reactor's staff were furloughed, leaving a skeleton crew to handle post-launch bug fixes for Zero Company.

"It's SO GOOD, but it's niche," Elliott added. "One thing limiting Zero Company's sales, as with many Star Wars games, is that it's only really popular in the West. Of Zero Company's players, 90% are in North America or Europe, with under 5% in Asia."

On Steam, Chinese user reviews sit at 57% positive (compared to an 82% global average), with many pointing to the lack of voiceover and localization options. Star Wars has never had the same pull in Asia as in the West, but skipping proper localization compounds that issue.

So what's next? The latest Zero Company patch was released on September 10, but we haven't heard from the studio since.

IGN's review of Star Wars Zero Company gave it a 9/10. We said: "Star Wars Zero Company is an excellent tactical game that does a fantastic job of slathering on the same cinematic look and feel we saw in Respawn's Star Wars Jedi games, incorporating strong characters and a storyline that's refreshingly centered on non-Force users and a non-traditional villain."
