Garry Newman, the founder of Facepunch, has firmly denied that a sequel to Rust is in development, following the appearance of a Steam page for 'Rust 2' that sparked widespread speculation among players.
The rumors began to swirl when a Reddit thread highlighted a legitimate Steam listing for 'Rust 2,' leading to immediate buzz about a potential viral announcement. A Facepunch developer quickly responded with the cryptic message, 'You saw nothing,' fueling further debate among the community. Players were left wondering if this could signal a full-fledged sequel or perhaps the long-anticipated port of Rust to a new engine, as the current version relies on Unity.
To clear the air, Newman issued a brief statement to PC Gamer, stating, 'Nope. We're not making Rust 2.' He added that he had 'no idea at all' about the origins of the Steam page, which remains live as of now. This isn't the first time Newman has addressed the possibility of a sequel; in 2023, he commented on Unity's controversial Runtime Fees, saying, 'Let's not make the same mistake again, Rust 2 definitely won't be a Unity game.'
Rust first launched in early access for PC and Mac in 2013 and gained renewed popularity during the lockdown era, leading to a console release in 2021. It has since maintained a strong presence on Steam, with updated versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S arriving in 2025. Fans have eagerly speculated about a potential sequel, especially as Facepunch has been developing its own engine, s&box (pronounced Sandbox), which is slated for launch later this month. Given this context, the Steam listing raises questions: was it merely a hoax, or could Newman be playing coy about future plans for the beloved survival game?
