Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Defies 'Live Service' Label, Says Saber Interactive's Tim Willits

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 continues to thrive with regular updates, but developer Saber Interactive insists it's not a live service game. Launched in September 2024, the title receives free updates, major patches, and season passes filled with cosmetic items, yet avoids the controversial monetization strategies often associated with live service models.

In the gaming industry, 'live service' has gained negative connotations following titles like Concord, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, and the canceled Highguard. Space Marine 2, however, remains untainted by this reputation.

Tim Willits, chief creative officer at Saber Interactive, explained in an interview with IGN that the term 'live service' now implies aggressive microtransactions, which doesn't align with their approach. 'We respect our players and support our games through amazing free updates and substantial paid expansions,' Willits stated. 'We don't nickel-and-dime people to death. There isn't really a perfect term for what we do—multiplayer games supported long-term without the typical live service baggage.'

Saber recently demonstrated this philosophy by releasing a significant free update that introduced the Techmarine as Space Marine 2's first new playable class, along with a new PvE map. Additional free updates are scheduled through the end of June.

Despite this, Space Marine 2 does offer paid DLC, including over $100 worth of cosmetic packs featuring famous Space Marine chapters and a Season Pass, all of which are purely cosmetic and don't impact gameplay. However, a recent $4.99 Chapter Voice Pack DLC sparked backlash, receiving 'overwhelmingly negative' reviews on Steam and accusations of false advertising. Willits responded simply, 'I thought it was cool. We'll see how it is,' suggesting this may be a learning opportunity for future content.

Amidst these developments, the Space Marine 2 community has raised concerns about support waning due to the announced development of Space Marine 3. Willits denied this, highlighting the recent Techmarine update and the game's strong sales performance. 'We're still making content for Space Marine 2 while the team works on Space Marine 3, similar to how we've supported World War Z,' he affirmed.
