Ubisoft's long-awaited remake Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced is set to launch on July 9 with significant changes, including new story quests and characters, but the removal of several key features. In a detailed presentation attended by IGN, Ubisoft revealed that the remake focuses exclusively on the single-player story of pirate-turned-Assassin Edward Kenway. As a result, the Freedom Cry DLC has not been integrated, the original multiplayer mode has been cut, and the playable modern-day sections have been removed. A small modern-day story element will remain, but players will no longer explore Abstergo Entertainment's offices, leaving unanswered questions about the game's bloodline-related narrative.
"With Resynced, we made a clear choice," said creative director Paul Fu. "It is a pure, story-driven adventure, and we are fully focused on Edward's adventures in the Caribbean. As a result, we have elected to not have the multiplayer or the DLC. Resynced is a 2026 take on the original legend, and the original will still be available for those who are curious."
The original Black Flag's modern-day segments allowed players to wander through Abstergo Entertainment, which resembled Ubisoft Montreal's offices. Gameplay was limited but included lore-gathering via computers, as a parallel story involving franchise villain Juno and her husband unfolded. Ubisoft acknowledged the challenge of contextualizing this content over a decade later, but the omission has disappointed some fans who had previously heard rumors of the change.
"Back in 2013, the present day reflected where the franchise was at," said Jean Guesdon, creative director of the original Black Flag and now Head of Content for the series. "It was a transition moment, especially with Desmond's story. But now with Resynced, I think there were some changes needed." Fu added, "Today, the modern day has evolved. For Resynced, we have approached it in a way that focuses on Edward's journey, while still connecting his memories to the Animus. The modern-day rifts will feature new moments that focus on Edward's internal struggles."
Ubisoft emphasized new additions, including three original crewmates for Edward: Lucy Baldwin, "The Padre," and "Dead Man Smith." Each comes with unique story quests. Additional scenes have been recorded with Edward (voiced by returning actor Matt Bellamy), along with new moments for fan-favorite characters Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet. A fresh scene featuring Edward and his wife Caroline was penned by Darby McDevitt, the writer of the original Black Flag (and Revelations, Valhalla, and the upcoming Hexe).
Gameplay mechanics have also been updated. Combat now resembles the parry-focused system of recent entries, but without out-of-place special attacks. "Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced matters deeply to us, and to you," said game director Richard Knight. "That's why we took the time to rebuild it with the care it deserves. This remains a solo adventure and character-driven experience. It is not an RPG."
Parkour options include free jumps, side ejects, back ejects, and a toggle crouch, similar to Shadows. Eavesdrop missions no longer auto-fail on detection, and the Jackdaw's cannons have new alternate fire upgrades. The three new crewmates add their own upgrades, and players can adopt a pet (cat or monkey) that hangs out by the ship's wheel. Sea shanties return with additional songs.
Visually, the game approaches the detail of current-gen title Shadows, with impressive towering waves and a dynamic weather system that can turn clear skies into storms. How well these additions integrate with original content and how existing missions have been tweaked remains to be seen. With the July 9 release date just three months away, fans now have a clearer picture of what to expect. A $200 Collector's Edition, featuring an Edward Kenway statue previously spotted on Vinted, was also announced.
