Blizzard Entertainment has reportedly become Microsoft's standout success story, with Overwatch and Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred propelling it to the status of Xbox's 'top-performing' studio. According to leaked emails reported by Windows Central, Blizzard's president Johanna Faries celebrated the studio's achievements, noting that it ended FY26 as the leading studio in Xbox's division and recorded its third-highest fiscal revenue in company history. The emails also revealed that FY25 and FY26 marked Blizzard's first consecutive years of growth since FY17, breaking a nearly decade-long stagnation. This resurgence was driven primarily by two titles: Overwatch and Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred, the latter being the second expansion for 2023's Diablo 4, launched in April. The expansion added new story content, a new region, and the Paladin and Warlock classes, building on the game's acclaimed action-RPG foundation. Despite past controversies, Diablo remains a powerhouse for Blizzard, while Overwatch has seen a revival in recent years, with 2025 introducing loot boxes and a new perk system, and 2026 dropping the '2' from its title while adding 10 new heroes and quality-of-life improvements. Faries highlighted Overwatch's strongest quarter since 2022 as evidence of the studio's success. Looking ahead, Blizzard is working on mobile spinoffs, trans-media projects, and the next main Diablo installment, though details remain under wraps. BlizzCon 2026, scheduled for September 12-13, is expected to offer a glimpse into these projects. Meanwhile, Xbox as a whole is facing challenges, with layoffs affecting 3,200 staff and criticism from developers like one at id Software, who accused executives of lacking artistic understanding.
