Blizzard has announced Overwatch Rush, a completely new mobile game that the company emphasizes is "an entirely new game - not a port." This comes as the original Overwatch has experienced a resurgence recently, following an overhaul that removed the "2" from its title, introduced five new heroes, and revamped menus and storytelling approaches. Blizzard appears eager to maintain this momentum with the launch of a distinct project.
Overwatch Rush is described as a "top-down hero shooter designed specifically for mobile, set in the Overwatch universe." Importantly, it is not a simple adaptation of the PC and console versions but a standalone endeavor developed by Blizzard, the studio behind Diablo and Warcraft. According to a press release, "Overwatch Rush is being developed by a dedicated team at Blizzard, separate from Team 4, all of whom have deep mobile experience. Team 4 remains fully focused on Overwatch, which will continue to bring exciting and fresh new experiences for PC and console players in its recently launched Season 1 and beyond!"
A brief preview video showcasing early development gameplay has been released, offering a new perspective on classic Overwatch action. The camera hovers above beloved heroes such as Mercy, Reinhardt, and Tracer as they battle on the South Korean Busan map. On-screen controls indicate that movement will be managed with the left finger, while primary fire and skill buttons are positioned on the right. From this initial look, the game retains Overwatch's intense 5v5 gameplay but at a somewhat more relaxed tempo.
Blizzard has promised updates soon, confirming that "as we prepare for testing Overwatch Rush in select countries and regions, check out our official Discord server for updates on the game. While there remains a lot of work to do, we’re eager to see how players enjoy what we’ve built so far, and to hear from them on what we should focus on in the coming phases of development. Our mission is to continue to expand the Overwatch universe by bringing fresh new adventures to players across all platforms. We'll continue to keep you updated on how things are progressing."
Personally, I haven't stopped playing Overwatch since my favorite hero, Domina, joined the game a few weeks ago. If I get the chance to continue playing on the go, it might become a bit of a problem for me. What are your thoughts on Overwatch Rush? Share your opinions in the comments!
