Bungie has confirmed it will stop releasing new content for its live-service shooter Destiny 2, nearly nine years after its initial launch. The studio, known for Halo and the recently released extraction shooter Marathon, stated that the final content update for Destiny 2 will arrive on June 9, 2026. The game will remain playable even after active development ceases.

In a social media statement, Bungie said: "We want to thank our community for nearly a decade of support. Destiny 2 will continue to be available, but there will be no further content updates after June 9."

The announcement makes no mention of future Destiny games or Marathon, suggesting that the franchise may be coming to an end. This marks the conclusion of a genre-defining series that began with Destiny 1 in 2014.

Destiny 1 launched on September 9, 2014, for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. It achieved massive commercial success but received mixed reviews from critics. As part of a high-profile publishing deal with Activision, expansions and updates followed. Destiny 2 launched on September 6, 2017, for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with a PC version releasing a month later. However, tensions between Bungie and Activision led to their split in January 2019, ending a 10-year publishing deal five years early.

After going independent, Bungie self-published Destiny 2 but faced financial struggles and layoffs as expansions underperformed and the player base shrank. Sony acquired Bungie in early 2022 for $3.6 billion, but the acquisition has yet to pay off. Sony recently reported a $765 million impairment loss due to Bungie's underperformance.

In the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026, Sony’s Game & Network Services Segment recorded a 120.1 billion yen (approx. $765 million) impairment loss against Bungie’s assets. This follows a 31.5 billion yen ($204.2 million) charge in Q2 and an additional 88.6 billion yen ($565 million) charge in Q4.

Hardcore extraction shooter Marathon launched in early March within the last fiscal year, coinciding with the additional impairment charge. Marathon reportedly had a budget of over $250 million and, according to analysts, failed to meet sales expectations.

During an investor Q&A, Sony CFO Lin Tao indicated the company will continue supporting Marathon to grow its user base. "In our studio business, earnings from Bungie’s title portfolio did not reach our expectations, so we downwardly revised our business plan and impaired the full amount of the fixed assets related to Bungie except for goodwill," Tao said. "Player reception to Marathon is strong, with a Metacritic score of 82 and over 90% positive Steam reviews. Engagement metrics like retention remain high. We aim to improve performance by retaining highly engaged core users through additional content, gameplay improvements, and user base expansion."
