Jeff Kaplan, the former head of the Overwatch development team, has delivered some straightforward advice for gamers who criticize titles they've never experienced: essentially, keep your opinions to yourself.
During an extensive livestream where he showcased his upcoming project, The Legend of California, the ex-Blizzard executive expressed confusion over why people would voice complaints about games they have no intention of playing. "If a game releases and you have no desire to play it, and you've never tried it? Just stop talking. Nobody is interested," Kaplan stated bluntly.
He elaborated on his perspective regarding toxic elements in gaming culture, noting, "It's easy to criticize something. It seems to require real bravery to simply say, 'Hey, I actually enjoy this.' We don't need to hear that you weren't interested. What's with this outrage over a game being made that doesn't appeal to you? I don't rush online every time a TV show airs—though I don't watch TV either—but seriously, why should my opinion matter if I'm not going to engage with it? And if I've never played it? Why does my view hold any weight?"
Kaplan concluded, "If you do play it—fantastic! You have a valid, informed opinion, and that's great. But we could all use a bit more positivity."
Recently, Kaplan discussed his reasons for leaving Blizzard after nearly two decades, citing intense financial pressures from Activision Blizzard that threatened job security for his team. He publicly announced his departure in August 2021, while the divisive Overwatch 2 was still in development. Kaplan began his career at Blizzard in 2002 as a designer on World of Warcraft, crafting quests for the then-upcoming MMORPG and later serving as a game director. In 2009, he led an ambitious, unannounced MMO project called Titan, which was canceled in 2014 after significant investment.
As for Overwatch, Blizzard's sequel initially faced challenges upon release, with a large player surge that later declined due to criticisms over monetization and the cancellation of the anticipated PvE Hero mode. However, the game has recently seen a resurgence, rebranded and entering a "story-driven era." Last month's launch of the first year-long storyline, The Reign of Talon, helped the game—formerly known as Overwatch 2—surpass its previous Steam concurrent player peak of 75,608, reaching 165,651 players, signaling a strong start for the revitalized hero shooter.
Kaplan is now focused on his new game, The Legend of California, an open-world action-survival shooter set in a fictionalized version of the US state during the gold rush era.
