Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 on PS5 seems to be more popular than Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Call of Duty: Warzone in the United States.

Today, PlayStation released a new update that allows players to easily see the most popular games in their country. In the United States, the list is mostly what you'd expect, as shown below.

The list is led by games like Fortnite, Minecraft, GTA 5, sports titles, the recently launched Marvel's Wolverine, and other free-to-play games. However, there's one standout: Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

Earlier this summer, Activision launched ports of the first two Black Ops games, which originally came out over a decade ago on PS3. They're widely considered some of the best Call of Duty games ever, and fans were surprised by their sudden return. The two titles dominated sales charts over the summer, but now it looks like Black Ops 2 has completely overshadowed the modern Call of Duty games.

As of this week, Black Ops 2 is the 9th most popular game on PS5, while the Call of Duty HQ app (which includes Black Ops 6, Black Ops 7, and Warzone) is nowhere to be seen. It's quite possible that fans have largely moved away from the modern Call of Duty games and are getting their fix from the older titles while waiting for Modern Warfare 4... or maybe they're just tired of the newer Call of Duty offerings.

Call of Duty disappointed many fans with Black Ops 7, which was underwhelming in both sales and player reception. There's some hope that Modern Warfare 4 can turn things around, but with GTA 6 on the horizon, the opportunity to do so will be fairly limited.

Treyarch also seems to be saying goodbye to the Black Ops franchise, as the team revealed today that it's looking to do something "new" and "something that nobody's ever experienced before." Treyarch might be able to achieve that in another Black Ops game, but the easiest way to reach those goals would be to let go of the series' baggage in favor of a new subfranchise for Call of Duty. It will likely be a few years before we see what Treyarch is planning, but it should be interesting to see where they take things from here.
