Capcom has signaled plans for the future of Dead Rising. In its latest earnings report, the Japanese company stated its intention to nurture several franchises for growth, with Dead Rising among them. The series is listed alongside heavy hitters like Devil May Cry, Dragon's Dogma, and Okami. Capcom notes that this "nurturing" of "leading brands" typically includes ports, remakes, and even sequels, but it's the inclusion of Dead Rising that has sparked the most debate.
Dead Rising 1 and 2 are well-regarded survival horror titles, and the third game received a decent reception as an Xbox One launch title. However, 2016's Dead Rising 4 drew mixed reviews, and no mainline sequel has followed since. The series returned in 2024 with a well-received remake of the original Dead Rising, fueling hopes for a Dead Rising 2 remake or Dead Rising 5. Yet some fans feel the franchise has failed to capture audiences or make a strong enough impression to warrant continuation.
"Dead Rising? Seriously? The franchise should stay dead after how much of a disaster Dead Rising 4 was," one fan commented. Others are championing its return and hoping Dead Rising 5 becomes a reality. "We used to pray for times like this," said another.
Rumors of a Dead Rising 5 set in Hollywood have circulated for a while, but its fate remains uncertain. Plans for a Dead Rising 5 reportedly existed right after the fourth game, featuring the return of Chuck Greene and his daughter Katey. The duo would have ventured into a fictional Mexican city in search of Zombrex, clashing with both a drug cartel and the undead. The project was scrapped after Capcom Vancouver was shut down in 2018.
Capcom has revitalized many franchises in recent years, with Resident Evil now more popular than ever. The recently released Resident Evil Requiem has sold 7 million copies and is hailed as one of 2026's best games. If Capcom can achieve similar success with Dead Rising, it would be a huge win.
