Capcom has issued an apology following fan uproar over a controversial storyline in Street Fighter 6 involving characters Alex and Patricia. Last week, Alex joined the game's playable roster, but his arcade mode ending sparked widespread criticism by revealing he marries Patricia, who is depicted as his adoptive younger sister and second cousin, with the couple expecting a baby. This twist shocked fans accustomed to their platonic, sibling-like relationship established since Alex's debut in Street Fighter 3: New Generation (1997), where Tom, Patricia's father, served as a father figure to orphaned Alex.

In response, Street Fighter 6 director Takayuki Nakayama apologized for the 'confusion,' stating that while character backstories remain unchanged, the development team plans to revise certain text passages deemed misleading in an upcoming patch. However, this announcement has fueled further backlash, as Capcom has not indicated any intention to remove the marriage plotline. Fans expressed disappointment, arguing that revisions won't address core issues, with one commenter noting, 'I don't think revising text passages is going to fix any of the character assassination that has happened.'

Additional details from the game's World Tour mode reveal that Tom is a cousin of Alex's mother, making Alex and Patricia second cousins, and Alex has known Patricia since she was a baby, adding to fan discomfort. Nakayama also shared a short story, 'A Toast between Fathers,' written by the scenario team, which attempts to justify the romantic shift by depicting Alex saving Patricia from trouble after they drifted apart. Yet, many fans rejected this explanation, with illustrator Shuckle creating fan art and questioning, 'How was this missed in the writing process?'

It remains unclear what specific text adjustments will be made, though potential changes may involve rephrasing Alex and Tom's relationship. In the English version, Alex refers to Tom as his adoptive father, while the Japanese version uses a vaguer term. Both versions currently confirm the cousin connection, and Nakayama's statement suggests this won't be altered. The controversy continues to stir debate among the Street Fighter community as players await the patch's release.
