Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls just wrapped up a record-breaking open beta weekend, with two characters dominating the roster. Despite some notable issues for PC players, the beta was a massive success, attracting more concurrent players on Steam than any other fighting game's open beta before it.
Specifically, Marvel Tokon hit a peak of 33,233 players, edging out Street Fighter 6's famously packed beta in 2023, which had 32,787. For comparison, Tekken 8's open beta later that year drew 15,035 players.
Among those players, two characters stood out: Magik and Blade. According to stats from FGC data compiler AlietteFaye, Magik was the most popular character overall and as a Team Leader in Vibranium ranks and above. Blade was second overall, but dropped to fourth as a Team Leader behind Spider-Man and Shuri. However, Blade was the most popular Assist Character by far, with Magik coming in second. Magneto and Spider-Man took third and fourth spots in overall usage and as Assists, while Danger was consistently the least popular. Ms. Marvel edged out Danger in overall usage and assists but was much more popular as a Team Leader.
This data, though limited to high ranks, reflected what many saw online: you couldn't go a match without encountering Magik or Blade. Blade's popularity isn't surprising, as fans have long wanted another Blade movie and game. Marvel President Kevin Feige recently admitted he felt like a 'gigantic loser and failure' for not getting the Mahershala Ali film off the ground after seven years. The Daywalker's game adaptation is also uncertain, with Xbox reportedly looking to sell or close Arkane, the studio behind it, amid Microsoft's restructuring. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said the studio is 'beginning required consultation with its Works Council to review potential strategic options,' leaving fans hopeful for a Blade game.
For now, players have Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls to look forward to, launching on August 6, 2026. Marvel's Wolverine follows on September 15, 2026, for PlayStation 5.
