Electronic Arts has initiated layoffs affecting an unspecified number of employees across its Battlefield development studios, including teams at Criterion, Dice, Ripple Effect, and Motive Studios, according to information obtained by IGN.

Affected personnel are being told these workforce reductions form part of a strategic "realignment" within the Battlefield studio network, as development teams continue providing live service support for Battlefield 6 post-launch. All four studios will maintain operations, though the cuts appear to be affecting various teams across multiple locations. IGN has contacted EA seeking clarification regarding the total number of impacted positions, the specific roles affected, and the precise reasoning behind these organizational changes.

Battlefield 6 achieved remarkable commercial success upon release, becoming 2025's top-selling video game in the United States. The title shattered franchise records by moving 7 million copies within its first three days, marking the most successful launch in Battlefield history. While critical reception for the single-player campaign proved somewhat divided, IGN's review awarded the multiplayer component an 8/10 score at launch.

Despite this strong start, Battlefield 6 has encountered growing challenges in subsequent months. Player feedback has grown increasingly critical regarding various updates, with complaints spanning cosmetic items, movement mechanics, and other gameplay elements. Three months post-launch, Steam user reviews have declined from "Mostly Positive" to "Mixed" status. Primary concerns include aggressive monetization practices, implementation of generative AI for cosmetic content, and slower-than-anticipated content updates. Community criticism became sufficiently substantial that development teams postponed Season 2's commencement to incorporate more player feedback, with EA recently publishing a three-month roadmap outlining planned updates.

Concurrent player numbers on Steam have experienced significant decline since Battlefield 6's record-breaking launch peak of 747,440 simultaneous players. Current Steam concurrents typically range in the tens of thousands, with yesterday's peak reaching 67,000 players on Valve's platform. While Steam statistics don't provide a complete picture of overall engagement (given Battlefield 6's availability on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles), they offer valuable insight into player retention trends, suggesting a potentially steeper decline than EA anticipated.

Meanwhile, the free-to-play Battlefield battle royale spinoff, Redsec, faces its own challenges, currently holding a 'Mostly Negative' recent review rating on Steam.

These workforce reductions follow two significant developments for EA: the tragic passing of Battlefield franchise lead Vince Zampella in a car accident several months prior, and the pending acquisition of EA by an investment consortium comprising Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners in an approximately $55 billion transaction. The acquisition is projected to finalize during the first quarter of EA's 2027 fiscal year (April-June of this year). Internal sources indicate EA maintains these layoffs are unrelated to the impending acquisition.
