Epic Games has revealed significant adjustments to Fortnite's V-Bucks currency, including price hikes and reduced free distributions, attributing these changes to the need to cover escalating operational expenses.
Since its 2017 debut, Fortnite's battle royale mode has become a cultural phenomenon, generating billions in revenue. Despite high-profile collaborations with movies and pop stars in recent years, its player base has been surpassed by the third-party platform Roblox.
This year, Fortnite introduced a system allowing third-party creators to sell microtransaction items, with Epic Games taking a share—a reversal of its earlier stance. The company has also been investing heavily in free games for its PC store, engaging in legal battles with Apple and Google, and developing an in-game mode supported by a $1.5 billion investment from Disney.
As a result, players will soon face higher V-Bucks prices and receive fewer free V-Bucks from the battle pass and Fortnite Crew subscription. To soften the blow, Epic Games has slightly lowered the V-Bucks cost for the battle pass, OG Pass, Music Pass, and LEGO Pass. However, with major collaborations typically featured in the Fortnite shop, the overall price increase is expected to lead to higher spending by fans.
Another key change involves the battle pass now providing just enough V-Bucks to purchase the next pass, eliminating the previous bonus that offered half its value again.
Updated pricing includes: $8.99 for 800 V-Bucks (down from 1000), matching the new cost of the main battle pass and OG Pass; the Music and LEGO passes will cost 1,200 V-Bucks instead of 1,400. Other tiers are: $22.99 for 2,400 V-Bucks (previously 2,800), $36.99 for 4,500 (down from 5,000), and $89.99 for 12,500 (instead of 13,500). For precise top-ups, the rate is now $0.99 per 50 V-Bucks, doubling the previous $0.50 rate.
Beyond citing bill payments, Epic Games has not elaborated on the reasons for the increases. These changes will take effect on March 19, coinciding with the start of the next battle royale season, which was previewed in a well-received trailer released just yesterday. (Perhaps Dwayne Johnson's involvement isn't as costly as it seems—or maybe it is.)
