Epic Games, the developer behind Fortnite, has announced a major workforce reduction of 1,000 employees, attributing the move to a noticeable drop in player engagement with its flagship battle royale title.

In a public statement released this morning, CEO Tim Sweeney explained that the company is currently operating at a financial deficit, spending more than it earns, which necessitates significant cost-cutting measures to ensure ongoing stability. This announcement follows closely on the heels of Fortnite's latest season launch and a recent price increase for V-Bucks, the game's virtual currency, which sparked considerable player discontent.

Sweeney directly addressed employees, stating, "Today we're laying off over 1,000 Epic employees. I regret that we find ourselves in this position again. The engagement downturn in Fortnite, beginning in 2025, has led to unsustainable spending, forcing us to implement major cuts to maintain company funding." He added that these layoffs are part of broader cost-saving initiatives exceeding $500 million in contracting and marketing, with a temporary halt on hiring for certain roles.

He pointed to both industry-wide issues and Epic-specific challenges. On the broader front, Sweeney cited slower growth, reduced consumer spending, and tougher economic conditions, noting that current console sales lag behind previous generations and games face stiff competition for user time from other entertainment forms. For Epic, he highlighted difficulties in consistently delivering high-quality seasonal content for Fortnite, ongoing efforts to optimize the game for mobile platforms, and the company's pioneering role in industry battles that are only beginning to yield returns.

Sweeney explicitly ruled out artificial intelligence as a factor in the layoffs, emphasizing that AI's role in boosting productivity is welcomed, as it allows for more developers to focus on creating exceptional content and technology. Among those affected are prominent Fortnite team members, such as principal engineer Evan Kinney, who expressed his disappointment on social media after years of dedicated work on the game's features and live events.

Looking ahead, Sweeney outlined Epic's strategy: to deliver compelling Fortnite experiences through fresh content, gameplay, and events; enhance developer tools as the company transitions from Unreal Engine 5 and UEFN to Unreal Engine 6; and launch ambitious plans later this year to usher in a new era for Epic. He reflected on the company's history of overcoming past upheavals, from the shift to 3D gaming in the 1990s to the rise of online gaming in 2012, expressing confidence in navigating current extreme market conditions to emerge stronger.

Epic is providing support to impacted employees, including severance packages with at least four months of base pay, extended healthcare coverage (e.g., six months in the U.S.), accelerated stock option vesting through January 2027, and extended equity exercise options. A company-wide meeting is scheduled for Thursday to discuss future plans in detail.
