Frustrated by Bungie's decision to end support for Destiny 2, fans are organizing a mass protest on June 9—the day the game's final content update launches—aiming to 'crash the servers' and prove the franchise still has a massive following.

In a Reddit post, user w1nds0r called for all Destiny players to return on that date, saying, 'We need to at least smash Marathon's all-time high to show them they made the wrong decision.' Marathon, Bungie's extraction shooter released in March, peaked at 77,358 concurrent players on Steam, but now hovers around 10,000. The goal is to demonstrate to Sony that Destiny is 'a franchise worth continuing to invest in.'

The post garnered over 1,000 responses, with fans expressing eagerness to return one last time—whether to explore the Tower, complete missions, or just chat in orbit. One user, JulioTheBoi, wrote, 'Haven't played since The Final Shape, but I'll be there. I need to give this game one last hurrah so that we don't go quietly into the dying of the light.' Another, izzbot, added, 'S*** I'm gonna reinstall just for that, f*** em.'

Sony likely expects the surge, as Destiny 2 will join PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium tiers on June 9, with the Legacy Collection (2025) including The Final Shape expansion available to subscribers, though some earlier expansions remain paywalled.

Following the news that most Bungie staff were unaware of the plan until it broke, the community has been saying goodbye. Some fans have flooded Marathon's Steam page with negative reviews, while others combat them with positive ones. A petition for Sony to greenlight Destiny 3 has surpassed 265,000 signatures.
