Sony has announced that Destiny 2 will be added to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium tiers on June 9, the very day Bungie releases the game's final live-service content update. The Destiny 2: Legacy Collection (2025), which includes The Final Shape expansion, will be available to Extra and Premium/Deluxe members from that date.

Last week, Bungie surprised the gaming world by revealing that support for Destiny 2 would end next month, effectively closing the chapter on the Destiny era that began with great excitement in 2014. Since then, there has been widespread concern, with many worried about Bungie's future amid impending layoffs and the lackluster performance of Marathon, the studio's recently released ultra-hardcore extraction shooter.

There is no evidence that Destiny 3 is in development, much to fans' disappointment. Bungie is reportedly working on several new game pitches, including some set in the Destiny universe, but there's no guarantee Sony will greenlight any of them.

"For almost 12 years, we have had the joy and honor to explore the Destiny universe with you all," Bungie said in its announcement. "Through all the ups and downs, surprises and triumphs, building Destiny alongside our players has been a monumental privilege. While our love for Destiny 2 has not changed, it has become clear that after The Final Shape, we have reached the time for our shared worlds, and Destiny, to live beyond Destiny 2."

Over the weekend, a petition calling on Sony to approve Destiny 3's development garnered over 120,000 signatures, and it now has over 220,000. The petition's creator, Harley Casto, said, "The desire for new adventures, fresh storylines, and innovative gameplay features is palpable among players everywhere."

"We believe in the potential of Destiny 3 to inspire new generations of gamers and to keep the fire of the Guardian spirit alive," Casto continued. "Join us in petitioning Sony to take this leap forward. Sign the petition to show your support for Destiny 3 and help us bring our love for this series to the next level. Together, let's make Destiny 3 a reality."

However, it seems unlikely the game will be made. According to Bloomberg, Bungie will face "significant" layoffs soon due to the end of Destiny 2 support, and Destiny 3 is not actively in development. For many fans, Destiny 3 always seemed like the obvious next step after the story-ending The Final Shape expansion launched in June 2024. So why didn't Bungie have a team working on it two years ago? The answer, Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier said on social media, came down to "how much money it would take."

As for Destiny 2 itself, while active development is ending, Bungie has promised to keep the game playable, just like the original Destiny. Many changes in the final update "will aim to ensure that Destiny 2 is a welcoming place for players to return to," Bungie said.
