According to recent data, Zach Cregger's film adaptation of Capcom's iconic horror series has been a massive hit, driving up sales for both Resident Evil 2 Remake and the 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4 on PlayStation 5.
Cregger's Resident Evil has achieved remarkable success across the board; it's not only the highest-grossing Resident Evil movie to date, but it's also boosting sales for the games that inspired it.
Statistics compiled by Alinea Analytics reveal that Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 4 (2023) saw a huge sales spike in the week following the movie's theatrical release. In a Substack post by Rhys Elliot of Alinea Analytics, it was noted that RE2 Remake and RE4 (2023) experienced a 64% and 54% increase in PS5 sales, respectively. When including Steam copies, the games saw an additional 11% and 14% boost, respectively.
On PlayStation, this translates to a staggering 80% and 84% increase in revenue for the two games, though it's worth mentioning that Capcom reduced prices for the games about 10 days before Cregger's film premiered.
Elliot points out that while deep discounts accounted for most of these impressive figures beforehand, Austin Abrams' highly relatable performance as Bryan significantly contributed to the surge in the week after release, which also led to more players jumping in.
Daily active users across several major Resident Evil titles rose after September 18, with RE2R seeing the largest jump at 48%, climbing from around 78,000 to approximately 116,000 daily players. This makes sense, as Cregger's film runs parallel to the events of that game.
Resident Evil 4 (2023) players increased by 24%, Resident Evil 3 Remake saw a 25% rise, and Resident Evil Requiem experienced a 20% increase in active players. Requiem also recently surpassed $500 million in total lifetime revenue, with a whopping 91% of sales coming from PlayStation and Steam. In fact, this game drove PlayStation and PC sales in Japan in the first half of 2026, rising by 13% to 21 million copies sold.
With the Code Veronica remake on the way, Resident Evil fans are being well-fed by Capcom, who have also had a fantastic year with three highly rated game releases. Onimusha: Way of the Sword was critically acclaimed at launch, and Pragmata surprised both critics and casual players with its innovative gameplay and emotional story.
