In a recent interview with Yahoo Japan, executive producer Jun Takeuchi shared Capcom's long-term vision for its flagship horror series, revealing that the overarching narrative has a definite ending—and it might arrive sooner than fans expect.

Takeuchi explained that the team has been expanding Resident Evil's story with each new installment, and that a ten-year strategy was actually devised during the planning stages for Resident Evil 2 Remake. "The series' story wasn't planned out from the beginning; it expanded with each new game. When we were planning RE:2 and creating a 10-year branding concept, this was the most challenging aspect. If you play through all of them, I think you'll realize the meaning behind the order of the remakes," he said.

"With the release of Requiem this year, I feel like the first 10 years have come to a close, so I think the conclusion will come in the next 10 years."

This news may disappoint hardcore fans who hoped to keep blasting through zombie hordes with Leon indefinitely, as well as devotees of the many other characters they've grown to love over the years. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean these characters won't return in a new, different story.

As for how many Resident Evil games fans can expect from Capcom in the meantime, Takeuchi assured that there will be several, though he didn't go into detail. "I can't say, because it would spoil the fun for everyone, but there won't be just one. There will be multiple titles," he said.

Resident Evil has been a massive success for Capcom, especially after RE7: Biohazard revitalized the series. Resident Evil 2 Remake is the franchise's best-selling game, and the latest entry, Resident Evil Requiem, surpassed $500 million in revenue after launching earlier this year, becoming a driving factor in console sales within Japan.

Additionally, Resident Evil 2 Remake was one of Capcom's top ten best-selling titles in the first half of its 2027 fiscal year, with RE7 not far behind. Resident Evil 4, RE3, and Requiem also made the list—meaning half of the company's top sellers in that period were Resident Evil games.

There's plenty for Resi fans to look forward to in the coming months: the Code Veronica remake launches early next year, and screenwriter Haris Orkin essentially leaked a story mode DLC for Requiem that's supposed to involve Spencer in some way. There's also Zach Cregger's Resident Evil movie to consider, which received rave reviews and was a box office hit—though it's unlikely Cregger ever makes a sequel, even though he already has plans for what he'd do next.
