Insomniac Games has officially stated that Marvel's Wolverine does not incorporate any generative AI, responding to fan speculation after unusual in-game signs caught attention on social media.
The controversy erupted when TikTok user SmoothMango posted a video highlighting two bathroom signs in the game that appeared to have distorted, merged figures—resembling assets often associated with AI generation. "Folks, that looks AI-generated," SmoothMango commented. "I'm trying to find another explanation because there's no way this is a bathroom for mutants. It looks extremely suspicious."
Given the heightened concerns about AI in gaming, fans quickly seized on the clip, worrying that Insomniac might have used the technology in Marvel's Wolverine. The images soon spread to X/Twitter, where user Rock Solid shared them, amplifying the unease.
In response, James Stevenson, Insomniac's director of community and marketing, addressed the issue directly on X. He explained that a "UV map bug" caused the strange signs and assured that a fix is in the works to resolve such glitches. Stevenson emphasized, "There are no AI-generated assets in Marvel's Wolverine."
While the exact timing of the fix is uncertain, fans can be relieved that the bathroom signs were not indicative of generative AI use. This marks another minor hiccup for the game, which launched on September 15.
Earlier, the game faced criticism over Logan's Scent Trails feature, mockingly called "fart gas" by some. A small patch for that was released yesterday, and Insomniac is exploring a toggle option for the tracking feature as post-launch support continues. Despite these issues and a linear story that has drawn some criticism, Marvel's Wolverine has seen a strong sales start. IGN rated it 6/10, noting that its "slick and satisfying combat wears thin well before its conclusion, so much so that even its strong character work can't quite save it from being anything more than okay."
