A new classification rating from the Australian Classification Board has sparked speculation that a port of the original 2009 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 could be on the horizon. The ACB recently updated its website with an R 18+ rating for the game, dated October 1, 2026, as first spotted by Insider Gaming. The rating cites "high-impact drug use, in-game purchases, online interactivity and chat," and its sudden appearance suggests Microsoft might be planning to revisit the classic shooter.
The listing, which remains live at the time of writing, specifically refers to the title as "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)." Many observers believe this is the first hint that a proper port will soon be announced. While platforms weren't mentioned, fans should stay alert for an official reveal.
There's good reason to suspect a return: Activision followed a similar playbook with the Black Ops series earlier this year. Ports for Black Ops 1 and 2 were leaked, announced, and launched within about a month back in June—seemingly to great success. Black Ops 2 reportedly became one of the best-selling games of the year in the month following its release. However, the strategy wasn't without controversy.
Critics labeled the Call of Duty ports as "low effort," noting that both Black Ops games were essentially direct re-releases of the original 2010s titles with few, if any, upgrades. Exploiters also plagued multiplayer lobbies, with players more interested in abusing the level-up system than actually playing. Activision eventually addressed the issue.
Technical and gameplay problems aside, the pricing also drew criticism. Each game cost $40 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, with DLC sold separately—season passes were priced at $29.99 each. PlayStation Plus subscribers received discounts, but players will likely be wary of similar issues if a Modern Warfare 2 port appears.
Microsoft and Activision released both Black Ops ports exclusively on PlayStation consoles in July. Which platforms Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) might launch on—or whether other early Modern Warfare titles will follow—remains to be seen. We'll have to wait for Activision to confirm.
IGN gave Infinity Ward's 2009 Call of Duty game a 9.5/10 review upon its release.
