Insomniac has revealed the features that will keep players engaged in Marvel's Wolverine long after the main story concludes. Unlike the studio's open-world Spider-Man titles, which are brimming with side quests and free-roaming opportunities, Marvel's Wolverine is a linear, narrative-focused experience centered on Logan's journey. However, as senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed and technology head Mike Fitzgerald shared with IGN, there's plenty to do even after the credits roll.
Throughout the game, players will encounter whiskey bottles that boost Wolverine's progression, material crates containing resources for unlocking suits, and Nightmare Doors that present unique challenges. "It is a story-driven adventure," Reiner-Reed said. "Logan is pulled through uncovering these mysteries of his past. But you can go off the beaten path."
The Nightmare Doors, in particular, are "manifestations of the horrible things happening in Logan's mind," Reiner-Reed added. "There's many of those throughout the game with different types of trials." One such trial, which we played during a hands-on session, is called Shinjuku Shuffle.
Marvel's Wolverine also includes a Mission Replay feature, allowing players to revisit any mission to collect missed items. Crucially, the game will have New Game Plus available from day one—something the Spider-Man games lacked. "In a New Game Plus, you can use all of your loadout and progression that you already unlocked," Reiner-Reed explained. "You can choose whatever suit you want. So there's some fun things that happen there. And also there's some adaptations that are only available in New Game Plus. So there's some fresh gameplay for folks."
These adaptations allow players to "amp up the difficulty" or make Logan "the much more powerful and aggressive character," Fitzgerald added.
These features may help address concerns about replay value that some fans have raised. While Marvel's Wolverine is a very different game from Insomniac's Spider-Man series, the replayability will come less from exploration and movement, and more from mastering combat and progressing Logan's abilities. Like the Spider-Man games, Wolverine will also feature a suit grind.
