Insomniac Games has stepped in to clarify confusion after a new trailer for Marvel's Wolverine led fans to mix up Lady Deathstrike with Psylocke.

If you thought the launch trailer for the PlayStation 5 exclusive would debut without any drama, think again. Despite being under 90 seconds long, Marvel's Wolverine sparked a wave of online confusion as viewers spotted what they believed to be a new character wielding a familiar purple energy sword.

Across YouTube, Instagram, X/Twitter, and other platforms, it's easy to find comments questioning whether the sneering villain in the trailer was Psylocke. Psylocke, a mutant known for her energy weapons and appearances in various X-Men stories, seemed like a likely candidate when a glowing sword appeared in the trailer. Many fans thought it was a major character reveal.

But it's not, and Insomniac is making that clear.

The post, published earlier today, identifies the sword wielder as Lady Deathstrike. While the developer didn't explicitly say it's addressing the backlash, comments suggest many are surprised any clarification was needed.

"The fact it has to be stated is so crazy to me," one user commented. "Larp monsters are everywhere."

"No that's Psylocke, some guy told me and he's for sure right," another joked.

The purple sword seems to be the main culprit, as many have pointed out that Lady Deathstrike looks nothing like Psylocke. This version of the character may not have a comic-accurate design, but her vest and hairstyle tie her more closely to Lady Deathstrike than to Psylocke.

Also, Insomniac has previously confirmed Lady Deathstrike's inclusion in Marvel's Wolverine, and this isn't the first time we've seen her. An early look at her new design appeared in July's 'Ain't No Hero' trailer, and a GIF posted by the studio showed her looking down at viewers.

These clips don't show her doing anything Psylocke would do. She's been shown attacking Logan with Lady Deathstrike's signature finger claws on full display. The origin of the sword remains a mystery, but it doesn't mean she's Psylocke. That said, Psylocke herself might still appear; other X-Men like Jean Grey and Sabretooth are confirmed. However, Insomniac hasn't publicly mentioned Psylocke.

Logan will face Lady Deathstrike, not Psylocke, when Marvel's Wolverine releases on PS5 on September 15, 2026. The launch trailer was part of Sony's recent State of Play, which you can catch up on here. For more, check out IGN's full preview and our breakdown of the game's many suits.
