At D23 2026, Disney and Square Enix took the stage for a deep dive into Kingdom Hearts, revealing an extended gameplay trailer for Kingdom Hearts 4. The trailer offers the first look at King Mickey, Donald, and Goofy as playable characters.
When the iconic crossover series made a surprise appearance during yesterday's Disney Entertainment Showcase, few expected Sora to show up in the world of Pixar's Coco, Keyblade in hand. But the real shocker came today with the four-minute trailer, which showcased Mickey, Donald, and Goofy as playable characters.
Gameplay for Goofy and Donald largely follows the style we've come to expect from Sora, except for a segment where the two Disney legends go sledding through the Underworld. They can be seen using abilities and teaming up to battle Heartless enemies.
King Mickey, however, receives special treatment. The first clip shows him exploring from a third-person perspective before transitioning to origami-like visuals that blend 2D and 3D gameplay. This section appears heavily inspired by Nintendo's Paper Mario, though the duration of these segments is still unknown.
Another surprise in today's extended look was Riku, who appears in the final moments of the video. You can watch the full extended Kingdom Hearts 4 gameplay trailer below.
Kingdom Hearts 4 is still on track for its late 2027 release. While waiting for more updates, be sure to check out everything announced during the panel.
