The Marathon Server Slam has wrapped up, with Bungie highlighting key player concerns ahead of the game's launch. A major point of discussion is the ultra-fast time to kill (TTK), where players can be eliminated almost instantly, losing shields and health in a flash. This applies to both enemy players and AI foes in the extraction shooter, making unexpected encounters deadly and gear losses permanent.
In a feedback recap, Bungie stated, "We've learned a lot from you, watched from the shadows as you've hit snags or found moments of glory, and taken notes the whole time. Your input during this time has given us a lot of items to sort through and we'll be doing just that in the coming days, so thank you." The developer acknowledged that TTK is "the hot topic" in PvP feedback, with some players desiring longer duels and more Runner interaction, while others enjoy the current pace. Bungie is reviewing Runner density on non-beginner maps and monitoring areas like Perimeter and Dire Marsh.
The Marathon community shows a divide: some urge Bungie to adjust the TTK, while others prefer it unchanged. One player commented, "You die before you can even react. I enjoy the game and the difficulty, but I feel like it’s an inflated difficulty with how fast the TTK is." Another noted, "I’m fine with the TTK but it makes 70% of the abilities we have pointless. We simply don’t get to use them." Suggestions include tweaking higher-tier shields to absorb more damage or distributing shields more readily during events like the Server Slam to ease the learning curve.
Concerns extend to the med and ammo economy, with players finding these items scarce, exacerbating the game's challenge. Bungie responded, "We hear you that meds are soaking a lot of your early loadout budget and that back-to-back fights can chew through your med and ammo reserves pretty quickly." Feedback on the UI, movement, and heat generation was also addressed, with plans for post-launch improvements to enhance navigation and gameplay fluidity.
Despite the brutal gameplay, many players find Marathon rewarding as they progress, though some worry it may deter casual players due to its steep learning curve and time investment. The Server Slam peaked at 143,621 concurrent players on Steam at launch but dropped to 64,128 by Sunday, ahead of Marathon's release on March 5 priced at $39.99. Bungie added, "Many Runners have maxed out their Faction Rep, adopted a Rook or two, and braved the haunted hallways of Hauler. We've also heard from people saying the deeper they get into progression, the more fun they are having. Tau Ceti can be unforgiving, and we can't wait to see you next week."
