The 'vast majority' of Bungie staff were allegedly unaware of plans to end support for Destiny 2 until the public announcement last week, according to a Forbes report. The news, which came as a shock to many within the studio, followed Bungie's recent launch of its new project, Marathon. Forbes sources claim that only a few teams knew in advance—those already working on final content or those who had moved to Marathon. The decision to drop support was reportedly made 'earlier this year,' leaving most developers to continue working on now-canceled updates like The Shattered Cycle. Some informed staff allegedly 'begged' leadership to tell more people. A subsequent Bloomberg report added that Bungie is planning significant layoffs and has no plans for Destiny 3. During a post-announcement town hall, employees reportedly asked about layoffs but received no clear answer. Bungie is now focusing resources on Marathon, which has a confirmed PvE mode and is estimated to have sold 1.2 million copies by March 24. Sony recently reported a $765 million impairment loss tied to Bungie's underperformance, having acquired the studio for $3.6 billion in 2022. Meanwhile, a fan petition for Destiny 3 has gathered over 200,000 signatures.
